Have you ever asked yourself if you can REALLY train your ear? Well I’m here to explain to you why ear training doesn’t seem to work, and it’s simple.
It’s because most people don’t practice!!
Make ear training work for you
That’s it, plain and simple! When you commit to a goal to train your ear and practice it regularly, you’ll see results.
If you want to get fit and gain some muscle, you’ve got to work out.
If you want to learn how to bake bread, you’ve got to bake more than one loaf.
If you want to learn to sew, you’ve got to make more than a scrunchie.
If you really want to train your ear, you’ve got to put in the time consistently and long enough to see some progress. It won’t happen overnight, but I guarantee you, it WILL happen.
My favorite way to start incorporating something new into my practice, or to freshen up a tired old process is to do a Challenge! So let’s do an Ear Training Challenge together!
Ear Training Challenge!
Step One – Download the Earpeggio app if you haven’t already (check out this post)
Step Two – Commit to setting aside 5 minutes, twice a day for one week (it’s closer to 3mins. I know. I timed it.) Everyone can commit to 10mins a day for a week, so set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget!
Step Three – Practice the Interval Identification game two times every day!
After you download the Earpeggio app, here’s the settings you’ll want to use inside the Interval Identification game:
- Intervals (M2, M3 – you can add up to P4 + P5 if the first two are easy)
- Playing Modes (Ascending)
- Fixed Root Note (Toggled on, green when on)
- Root Note (two-line C)
- Tempo (80)
This is super easy to do to get the ear training ball rolling, you can do it! If you want to be accountable, reply to this email and let me know you completed it! I’ll be honest and let you know if I did mine too.
Let’s go!
Weekly Challenge 💪🏻
This week we are doing an Ear Training Challenge (see yesterday’s post for details)! Keep playing the Interval Identification game 2x daily!
Practice that all week and then we’ll be posting a screenshot of your progress in Tuesday’s Brag Box. Pop over to the Worship Community Group to participate!
Drill of the Week! 🎶
This week’s we’re going to do a new Hanon exercise! Hanon #3 is very similar to #2 which makes one think, “Oh great, this should be easy!” The challenge is that you’ve created some muscle memory for #2’s pattern so be sure to attack it slowly at first and make sure you’re playing the #3 pattern all the way through. Especially when you make the switch and start heading back down the keyboard. LOL! That gets me every time.

Be sure to play slowly and steadily in the beginning. Don’t pick up the speed until you can play the whole thing without mistakes!
Practice this exercise 1x daily, going up AND down the keyboard for one octave.
