The Magic Of First Inversion: A Guide To Create Beautiful Music

What is the first step in the transition from playing chords and sounding like a pro? First, inversion. It’s magical because one simple change can open up your playing in ways you never thought possible!!

The opportunities are virtually endless!

If you need a refresher on inversions and how to create them, check out this post and then come back. We’re headed STRAIGHT into all the magical goodness today.

Let’s look at the key of C to start (and don’t we always 😉). Normally, if we were going to play a 1-4-5 progression (that’s C-F-G), you’d be playing these chords.

But that’s a LOT of movement.

Way too much movement.

Let’s simplify the 1 chord using first inversion

See how much better that sounds?

THAT… is the first step to sound like a pro, and isn’t it so stinkin’ easy?

Weekly Challenge 💪🏻

Try the 1-4-5 First Inversion exercise in any 5 keys! Try a new key each day and challenge yourself. Take a song you’ve been learning and try replacing the 4 and the 5 with the first inversion for each. See how it goes!

Practice that this week and then post a video of your progress on Takeaway Tuesday.

Drill of the Week! 🎶

This week’s drill is a hand independence drill that alternates between playing loudly and softly!

Check out the demonstration below:

https://www.limitlessmusiclessons.com/dotw

This exercise will help rewire your brain by requiring you to play loudly with one hand and softly with the other, all while playing together in unison. The notes are simple, but playing it is not. 🙂

Be sure to play slowly and steadily in the beginning. Don’t pick up the speed until you can feel yourself being able to focus on one hand at a time. Even if it takes days (or longer!)

Practice this exercise 10x daily.
